What are sound-absorbing paintings?
Artworks built with sound-absorbing materials, to improve the acoustics of a room.
This is one of them. Nothing on the front shows what it does: the acoustic material sits behind the painted layer, and what hangs on the wall is a painting.
Hard, smooth surfaces in a room reflect sound. Windows, plastered walls and smooth floors make a room sound hollow. The result of that reflection is echo and reverberation.
Sound-absorbing paintings take in part of that hard sound and soften the room with tone and colour. The acoustic material sits behind a sound-permeable painted surface, so what you see is a painting, not a technical panel.
